Modes are an essential part of the true home automation experience. With modes, you can set your devices to behave differently during each mode. For example you probably don't want your bathroom lights coming on at full blast in the middle of the night like you might during other times of the day.

In order to start using modes in your automations, you need to first create them in the Location section. Your Hubitat Elevation™ comes with four default modes, but you can change them in the Location section as well.

It's important to note that modes do nothing on their own. There are no built-in mode "settings"; modes will not change on their own. To set your modes, use [[Mode Manager]] (or [[Rule Machine]]). There you can set modes to automatically change based on time of day, day of the week, presence and more. You can also program modes to change at the press of a button.

The Location and Modes Page is where you will set your geographic location, time zone, temperature scale and create your modes. This is the initial page you will see when you first register your hub

Location

To change your location, enter your postal code in the postal code field (A) and hit the tab key. This will auto populate the rest of your location information, including the sunset/sunrise times. You can pinpoint your exact location by moving the pin on the map or use the Satellite view in the upper left-hand corner of the map to give you a better visual for finding your home (B). The latitude and longitude coordinates will automatically change as you move the pin around.

  • NOTE: This is important for rules using geolocation.

Use can also enter your precise Latitude and Longitude as an alternate method to pinpoint your exact location (C).

When you are satisfied with your settings, press the Update button (D).

The Location tab of the "Location and Modes" page allows you to set your hub location by [A], your postal code, [B] by dragging the hub icon on a map, to its approximate location or [C] by entering the exact latitude and longitude of your hub's location. Press the "Update" button in the lower right when you are satisfied with your location settings.

Modes

Your current modes will all be listed here (E). To change a mode name, type in the new name and press Update or press Delete to remove the mode. Modes can be set by creating rules in Mode Manager or Rule Machine®. You can also add a Mode tile to your Hubitat® Dashboard for quick access to change modes manually.

Add New Mode

This is where you create new modes (F). Type the name of the new mode and select Create. This new mode can also be configured in Mode Manager and other apps.
